NASCAR Cup Series: Martin Truex Jr. wins 2019 Gander RV 400

Martin Truex Jr. earned his second victory of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season by winning the season’s 11th race, the Gander RV 400, at Dover International Speedway.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. earned his second victory of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season and his second victory in the last three races by winning the 11th of 36 races on the schedule, the Gander RV 400, at Dover International Speedway.

Truex Jr. qualified for this 400-lap race around the four-turn, 1.0-mile (1.609-kilometer) high-banked Dover International Speedway oval in Dover, Delaware in 13th place in his #19 Toyota, but he was forced to start back in 35th as a result of the fact that he failed pre-race inspection twice.

Truex Jr. won the race by a whopping 9.501 seconds, nearly half a lap, over Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman in second place in his #88 Chevrolet. Bowman was also sent to the back of the field for the start of the race as a result of the fact that he failed pre-race inspection twice. He originally qualified in fifth but started in 34th.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson finished in third place in his #42 Chevrolet ahead of Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick, who was the highest finishing Ford driver of the race. He finished in fourth in his #4 Ford. As a result, all four of the race’s top four finishers recorded or tied their highest finishes of the season.

Race polesitter Chase Elliott of Hendrick Motorsports finished in fifth place in his #9 Chevrolet. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Erik Jones finished in sixth in his #20 Toyota.

Team Penske’s Joey Logano, Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron, Stewart-Haas Racing’s Clint Bowyer and Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch rounded out the top 10 by finishing in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #22 Ford, #24 Chevrolet, #14 Ford and #18 Toyota, respectively.

The race featured a total of 15 lead changes among 11 drivers. Aside of Truex Jr., who led 132 laps, 10 drivers led at least one lap of the race. Elliott led more laps than anybody else in the field with 145 laps led.

The other nine drivers who led at least one lap of the race were Bowman, Harvick, Logano, Byron, Busch, Stewart-Haas Racing’s Daniel Suarez, Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski, Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson and Front Row Motorsports’ Michael McDowell. Logano won stage one while Truex Jr. won stage two.

The race also featured a total of six caution flag periods, of which only three took place due to small incidents. None took place due to huge wrecks or even average crashes. The other three caution flag periods included a competition caution flag period as a result of the fact that the track had been rained on overnight and the usual two caution flag periods for the endings of stages one and two. Of the 37 drivers who started the race, 34 finished it. Of the 34 drivers who finished the race, 11 finished it on the lead lap.
