NASCAR: Kurt Busch spending weekend at 24 Hours of Le Mans
Kurt Busch has some big plans for the NASCAR Cup Series off weekend this weekend. He is planning to join his boss, Chip Ganassi, at the 24 hours of Le Mans starting this Saturday.
Kurt Busch’s NASCAR Cup Series contract with Chip Ganassi Racing is up at the end of this season, and as of right now, he is unsure of what next year has in store for him. As a result, he is beginning his search for what he wants to do in the future, and he is planning to check out sports car racing.
Busch is set to attend this weekend’s 24 Hours of Le Mans and spend the weekend Chip Ganassi Racing team owner Chip Ganassi.
Chip Ganassi has four Ford GTs racing in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, and he has two Ford GTs that race in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. If Busch would decide to try his hand at sports car racing, Chip Ganassi Racing would be his best bet to give him a ride.

If Busch does decide to move from NASCAR to sports car racing, it would not be the first time we have seen a NASCAR driver do this. There have been many NASCAR drivers to give just the 24 Hours of Daytona, the biggest IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race of the year, a try. These drivers include Dale Earnhardt, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Jamie McMurray and A.J. Allmendinger, just to name a few.
There have also been NASCAR drivers who have driven full seasons in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The most recent one is Juan Pablo Montoya, who is currently driving as a member of Acura Team Penske in the DPi (prototype) class. Montoya was the full-time driver of the number #42 Chip Ganassi Racing Dodge/Chevrolet from 2007 to 2013 in the Cup Series before he became the full-time driver of the #2 Team Penske Chevrolet in IndyCar from 2014 to 2016. He then joined Acura Team Penske in 2017.
Another driver who we have seen drive in NASCAR and drive full seasons in IMSA is Andy Lally. Lally has driven in 38 Cup Series races, 11 Xfinity Series races and 14 Truck Series races. He has been driving sports cars full-time since 2004.
I would like to see Busch stay in NASCAR, as he is one of the drivers who I grew up watching. But if he cannot find a suitable Cup Series team to drive for next season, I think it would be a great move for him to switch over to sports cars, and it would also be great for the sports car racing world to get a big-name American driver such as Busch to drive full-time.
In terms of searching for a new Cup Series contract for next year, Busch is currently in eighth place in the championship standings. He has no wins or stage wins so far this year, but he has four top five finishes, nine top 10 finishes and an average finishing position of 9.73, the third best average finishing position among all drivers.
Make sure to join Kurt Busch in watching the 24 Hours of Le Mans this Saturday, June 15. Live coverage is set to start in the United States at 8:00 a.m. ET on MotorTrend TV. The next opportunity to watch him compete in the NASCAR Cup Series is two Sundays from now at Sonoma Raceway. That race, the Toyota/Save Mart 350, is set to be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1 beginning at 3:00 p.m. ET.
