NASCAR Cup Series: Martin Truex Jr. wins 2019 Toyota/Save Mart 350

Martin Truex Jr. tied the series-high win total with his fourth victory of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season by winning the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. tied teammate Kyle Busch atop the wins list through the first 16 races of the 36-race 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season, as he won the season’s 16th race, the Toyota/Save Mart 350, at Sonoma Raceway, giving him two consecutive victories in this race and three in the last seven seasons.

Truex Jr. started this 90-lap race around the 12-turn, 2.52-mile (4.056-kilometer) Sonoma Raceway road course in Sonoma, California in eighth place in his #19 Toyota, and he won it by 1.861 seconds over Busch in second in his #18 Toyota.

Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney was the highest finishing Ford driver of the race. He finished in third place in his #12 Ford. Leavine Family Racing’s Matt DiBenedetto finished in a career-high fourth in his #95 Toyota ahead of Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin in fifth in his #11 Toyota.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick and Roush Fenway Racing’s Ryan Newman finished in sixth and seventh place in their #4 Ford and #6 Ford, respectively. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Erik Jones finished in eighth in his #20 Toyota, giving Joe Gibbs Racing four of the top eight positions.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Aric Almirola finished in ninth place in his #10 Ford. and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson, who started from the pole position for this race for the third consecutive season, was the highest finishing Chevrolet driver of this race. He rounded out the top 10 by finishing in 10th in his #42 Chevrolet.

This race featured a total of seven lead changes among five drivers. Aside of Truex Jr., who dominated the third and final stage of the race and led more laps than anybody else in the field with 59 laps led, four drivers led at least one lap of the race.

These four drivers were Busch, Hamlin and Hendrick Motorsports teammates William Byron and Chase Elliott. Larson did not lead any laps after starting from the pole position. Byron won stage one while Hamlin won stage two.

This race did not feature any caution flag periods aside of the two caution flag periods that took place as a result of the usual endings of stages one and two. Of the 38 drivers who started the race, 35 finished it, and of these 35 drivers, 24 finished on the lead lap.

Most notably, Elliott, who was on pace for a solid top three finish and what would have been his sixth top five finish in the last seven races, ran into a mechanical issue in the third and final stage and was forced to retire from the race and settle for a 37th place finish.
