By Asher Fair
Factoring in several pre-qualifying and post-qualifying penalties, here is the provisional starting grid for the Austrian Grand Prix, the ninth race of the 2019 Formula 1 season.
Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took the second pole position of his Formula 1 career and his second pole position of the 2019 season for the Austrian Grand Prix, the ninth of 21 races on the schedule, and he is one of only two drivers who is physically set to start the race where he qualified.
Just one of the other 19 drivers on the grid for this 71-lap race around the 10-turn, 2.683-mile (4.318-kilometer) Red Bull Ring road course in Spielberg, Styria, Austria is set to start where he qualified. Several of the other drivers were penalized while several others benefited from the fact that these drivers were penalized.
Rich Energy Haas’ Romain Grosjean, like Leclerc, is set to start this race where he qualified. He qualified in 11th place and is set to start there, as he was not affected by any of these grid penalties.

As far as the grid penalties are concerned, several were already determined leading into the qualifying session for this race. Haas’ Kevin Magnussen was issued a five-position grid penalty for a gearbox change while Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg was issued a five-position grid penalty for an engine change.
Magnussen originally qualified in fifth place while Hulkenberg originally qualified in 12th. Magnussen is set to start in 10th while Hulkenberg is set to start in 15th as opposed to 17th because of penalties that were issued to other drivers.
Meanwhile, McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr. and Scuderia Toro Rosso rookie Alexander Albon are set to start at the back of the grid in 19th and 20th place after qualifying in 15th and 13th, respectively, as a result of power unit changes.
ROKiT Williams Racing’s George Russell was issued a three-position grid penalty for impeding the lap of Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat in the first of three rounds of qualifying for this race. Russell originally qualified in 19th place. Because of these other penalties, he was set to start in 16th, but he is now set to start in 18th as a result of his penalty, a net gain of one position despite the fact that he was penalized.
Most notably, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton was also issued a three-position grid penalty for impeding the lap of Alfa Romeo Racing’s Kimi Raikkonen in the second round of qualifying for this race. Hamilton originally qualified alongside Leclerc on the front row in second place. He is set to start in fourth place, not fifth, because of Magnussen’s penalty.
Here is the provisional starting grid for the 2019 Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring.
