Formula E: 4 teams remain mathematically in championship contention
By Asher Fair
Four of Formula E’s 11 teams are still mathematically eligible to win the 2018-2019 team championship heading into the season’s penultimate race.
Of the 13 races on the 2018-2019 Formula E schedule, 11 have been contested, leaving just two more races, the two races of the New York City ePrix, to be contested before the season concludes.
Following the conclusion of the season’s 11th race, the Swiss ePrix, at Bern Street Circuit, four of the eight teams that were still mathematically eligible to win this year’s team championship were mathematically eliminating from doing so, leaving four that still have a chance to pull it off.
Teams can score a maximum of 47 points in each race, with 25 points being awarded to the race winner, 18 points being awarded to the race’s second place finisher, three points being awarded to the race polesitter and one point being awarded to the driver who records the race’s fastest lap time.

As a result, a maximum of 94 points are still on the table for each team throughout the remainder of the season. All teams that are not currently within 94 points of the leaders of the team standings have been mathematically eliminated from championship contention.
DS Techeetah currently lead the team standings with 216 points, as teammates Jean-Eric Vergne and Andre Lotterer have scored 130 points and 86 points for the team so far this season, respectively. Of the sport’s 11 teams, four, three not including the DS Techeetah, are currently within 94 points of DS Techeetah’s point total. The other three teams that are in the top four in the standings all sit within 77 points of DS Techeetah.
Here are the current top four in the team standings following the 2019 Swiss ePrix at Bern Street Circuit.
Rank – Team, Manufacturer: Points (Behind)
1st – DS Techeetah, Spark-DS Automobiles: 216 (0)
2nd – Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler, Spark-Audi: 173 (-43)
3rd – Envision Virgin Racing, Spark-Audi: 150 (-66)
4th – Nissan e.dams, Spark-Nissan: 139 (-77)
HWA Racelab, Geox Dragon Racing and NIO had already been mathematically eliminated from team championship contention before this race.
Meanwhile, Mahinda Racing, BMW i Andretti Motorsport, Panasonic Jaguar Racing and Venturi were all eliminated in it. They currently sit in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth place in the team standings with 117, 106, 98 and 88 points and trail DS Techeetah by 99, 110, 118 and 128 points, respectively, meaning that there is no mathematical way by which any of them can win this year’s team championship.
While four of the 11 teams that compete in Formula E are still mathematically eligible to win the 2018-2019 championship, only a few of them still have more than just a slight chance to make it happen.
Which team will ultimately be crowned champions once the checkered flag flies on the season following the second race of the New York City ePrix at Brooklyn Street Circuit in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York in mid-July?
The next race on the schedule is the first race of the New York City ePrix, which is scheduled to take place at the same track on Saturday, July 13, just one day prior to the season finale.
