Formula 1: Lewis Hamilton takes pole for 2019 German Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton took the pole position for the German Grand Prix, the 11th race on the 2019 Formula 1 schedule, at the Hockenheimring.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton tied teammate Valtteri Bottas atop the pole position list in the 21-race 2019 Formula 1 season by taking his fourth pole position of the season for the season’s 11th race at the Hockenheimring, the German Grand Prix, in a qualifying session that was riddled with misfortune for Scuderia Ferrari, the fastest team in all three practice sessions for the race.

Hamilton took the pole position for this 67-lap race around the 16-turn, 2.842-mile (4.574-kilometer) Hockenheimring road course in Am Motodrom, Hockenheim, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany by recording a top lap time of 71.767 seconds (142.561 miles per hour) in the third and final round of qualifying for this race.

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen is set to start alongside Hamilton on the front row after qualifying in second place. Bottas qualified in third and is set to start alongside Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly in fourth on the second row.

Alfa Romeo Racing’s Kimi Raikkonen qualified in fifth place and is set to start alongside Rich Energy Haas’ Romain Grosjean in the in sixth on the third row.

McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr., SportPesa Racing Point’s Sergio Perez and Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg were the slowest three of the 10 drivers who advanced to the third and final round of qualifying for this race, although Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc qualified in 10th place since he did not actually complete a lap time in this round as a result of a mechanical issue. Sainz Jr., Perez and Hulkenberg rounded out the top nine by qualifying in seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively. Eight different teams fielded at least one of the top 10 qualifiers.

Alfa Romeo Racing rookie Antonio Giovinazzi, Haas’ Kevin Magnussen, Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo, Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat and Racing Point’s Lance Stroll were eliminated following the second round of qualifying for the race after qualifying in 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th place, respectively.

McLaren rookie Lando Norris, Toro Rosso rookie Alexander Albon, ROKiT Williams Racing teammates George Russell, a rookie, and Robert Kubica and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel were eliminated following the first round of qualifying for the race after qualifying in 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th place, respectively.

Vettel did not complete a lap in this round of qualifying as a result of a mechanical issue after he and Leclerc swept the top two in two of the three practice sessions for the race and took a 1-3 finish in the other.
