NASCAR Xfinity Series: Austin Cindric earns first win at 2019 Zippo 200 at The Glen
By Asher Fair
Austin Cindric earned the first victory of his NASCAR Xfinity Series career by winning the 2019 season’s 20th race, the Zippo 200 at The Glen, at Watkins Glen International.
After an intense battle with Kaulig Racing’s A.J. Allmendinger in the closing laps of the Zippo 200 at The Glen at Watkins Glen International following a bold call to take tires during a late pit stop, Team Penske’s Austin Cindric prevailed to secure the first victory of his NASCAR Xfinity Series career.
Cindric started this 82-lap race, the 20th of 33 races on the 2019 schedule, around the eight-turn, 2.454-mile (3.949-kilometer) Watkins Glen International road course in Watkins Glen, New York in second place in his #22 Ford, and he won it by 1.168 seconds over Allmendinger in second in his #10 Chevrolet
Cindric led the race late, but he surrendered that lead during a late pit stop. Had he not done so, Allmendinger may have been in a position to win the race, as he had the newest tires of everybody running in the top four. But Cindric battled his way back through the field on 19-lap newer tires than Allmendinger and took the lead from him with two laps remaining.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell was the highest finishing Toyota driver of the race. He finished in third place in his #20 Toyota. JR Motorsports’ Justin Allgaier and Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney rounded out the top five by finishing in fourth and fifth in their #7 Chevrolet and #12 Ford, respectively.
Richard Childress Racing’s Tyler Reddick, Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Chase Briscoe and Cole Custer and JR Motorsports teammates Michael Annett and Noah Gragson rounded out the top 10 by finishing in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #2 Chevrolet, #98 Ford, #00 Ford, #1 Chevrolet and #9 Chevrolet, respectively.
This race featured a total of nine lead changes among six drivers. Aside of Cindric, who led eight laps, five other drivers led at least one lap of the race. These drivers were Allmendinger, Bell, Allgaier, Blaney and Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch. Busch won stage one while Allmendinger went on to win stage two. Allmendinger led more laps than anybody else in the field with 24 laps led.
Busch dominated the race early on, but he lost control of his car in stage two while battling for the lead with Blaney and ultimately failed to finish the race with suspension failure. He was officially scored in 32nd place after starting from the pole position and leading the first 22 laps.
This race also featured a total of seven caution flag periods, including five that took place as a result of on-track incidents and two that took place as a result of the usual endings of stages one and two. Of the 37 drivers who started the race, 28 finished it and 24 finished on the lead lap.
