NASCAR Xfinity Series: Tyler Reddick goes last to first, wins 2019 Food City 300
By Asher Fair
Tyler Reddick secured his fourth victory of the 2019 NASCAR Xfinity Series season by going from last to first and winning the Food City 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Richard Childress Racing’s Tyler Reddick started the Food City 300, the 22nd of 33 races on the 2019 NASCAR Xfinity Series schedule, at Bristol Motor Speedway in 38th (last) place in his #2 Chevrolet.
He fell one lap off the lead lap on the opening lap as a result of a drive-through penalty, and he spun out after rallying his way through the field before stage one ended.
But none of that preventing him from securing his fourth victory of the season by winning this 300-lap race around the four-turn, 0.533-mile (0.858-kilometer) Bristol Motor Speedway oval in Bristol, Tennessee.
Reddick ended up winning this race by 0.655 over Stewart-Haas Racing’s Chase Briscoe in second place in his #98 Ford. GMS Racing’s John Hunter Nemechek finished in third in his #23 Chevrolet.
Jeremy Clements Racing’s Jeremy Clements finished in a season-high fourth place in his #51 Chevrolet ahead of race polesitter Austin Cindric of Team Penske in fifth in his #22 Ford.

SS-Green Light Racing’s Gray Gaulding finished in sixth place in his #08 Chevrolet with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes riding on his hood. MBM Motorsports’ Timmy Hill finished in a career-high seventh in his #61 Toyota.
JR Motorsports teammates Justin Allgaier, who appeared poised to win the race late before one of his tires went flat after he led 131 laps, salvaged an eighth place finish in his #7 Chevrolet. He finished ahead of teammate Michael Annett, who was involved in a late wreck himself but bounced back, in ninth in his #1 Chevrolet, and JD Motorsports’ Landon Cassill rounded out the top 10 by finishing in 10th in his #4 Chevrolet.
This race featured a total of 10 lead changes among seven leaders. Aside of Reddick, who led only 19 laps, six other drivers led at least one lap of the race. These drivers were Cindric, Allgaier, Annett, Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Brandon Jones and Kyle Busch and JR Motorsports’ Noah Gragson.
Jones won stage one while Busch won stage two, although Busch won stage two with an engine that was in the process of giving out inside his #18 Toyota. After leading a race-high 137 laps, he was forced to retire from the race after he won stage two.
Meanwhile, Jones had a chance to win the race late, as he was running in second place behind Allgaier before one of Allgaier’s tires went down, but he got into the wall and ended up finishing in 11th place in his #19 Toyota.
This race featured a total of nine caution flag periods, including eight that took place as a result of on-track incidents. One of these incident-related caution flag periods also ended stage one, while the only non-incident-related caution flag period ended stage two.
The most notable caution flag period of this race took place in stage one and involved several contenders, including Cup Series regulars Erik Jones of Joe Gibbs Racing and Joey Logano of Team Penske.
It started when Xfinity Series championship contenders Cole Custer of Stewart-Haas Racing and Christopher Bell of Joe Gibbs Racing, two of the three members of the “Big 3” along with Reddick and the only two drivers who have won more races than Reddick has so far this season, made contact on the front straightaway.
However, only Jones and Logano, who had nothing to do with how the wreck started, ended up being taken out of competition as a result of this incident.
Of the 38 drivers who started this race, 25 finished it, but of the 25 drivers who finished it, only six finished on the lead lap.
