Formula 1: Charles Leclerc takes dominant pole for 2019 Belgian Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc took the pole position at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps for the 13th race on the 2019 Formula 1 schedule, the Belgian Grand Prix, and he did so in dominant fashion.

Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took his third pole position of the 2019 Formula 1 season and of his Formula 1 career for the 13th of 21 races on this year’s schedule, the Belgian Grand Prix, at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, and he did so in dominant fashion.

Leclerc took the pole position for this 44-lap race around the 19-turn, 4.352-mile (7.004-kilometer) Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps road course in Stavelot, Belgium by recording a top lap time of 102.519 seconds (152.822 miles per hour) in the third and final qualifying session for this race.

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who qualified in second place, did so with a top lap time that was a whopping 0.748 seconds (1.107 miles per hour) slower than that of Leclerc at 103.267 seconds (151.715 miles per hour). Nevertheless, he contributed to Ferrari’s second front row lockout of the season.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport teammates Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas qualified in third and fourth place, respectively, to secure second row starting positions ahead of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen in fifth.

Renault teammates Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg, Alfa Romeo Racing’s Kimi Raikkonen, SportPesa Racing Point’s Sergio Perez and Rich Energy Haas’ Kevin Magnussen rounded out the top 10 by qualifying in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place, respectively.

Haas’ Romain Grosjean, McLaren rookie Lando Norris, Racing Point’s Lance Stroll, Red Bull Racing’s Alexander Albon and Alfa Romeo Racing rookie Antonio Giovinazzi were eliminated following the second round of qualifying after qualifying in 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th place, respectively. Giovinazzi did not get to record a lap time in this round of qualifying as a result of an engine issue at the end of the first round.

Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly, McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr., Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat and ROKiT Williams Racing teammates George Russell, a rookie, and Robert Kubica were eliminated following the first round of qualifying for the race after qualifying in 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th place, respectively. Kubica did not get to record a lap time in qualifying as a result of an engine issue.
