NASCAR Xfinity Series: Denny Hamlin disqualified; Cole Custer wins at Darlington
By Asher Fair
Cole Custer has been named the winner of the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Darlington Raceway, the Sport Clips Haircuts VFW 200, after Denny Hamlin was disqualified.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin started the Sport Clips Haircuts VFW 200 in 37th place but carved his way through the field to win his sixth NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Darlington Raceway.
Hamlin held off Stewart-Haas Racing’s Cole Custer by 0.602 seconds to win this 147-lap race around the four-turn, 1.366-mile (2.198-kilometer) Darlington Raceway oval in Darlington, South Carolina.
But his #18 Toyota failed post-race inspection, as it did not meet the minimum requirement for the left-front height. Hamlin was officially demoted to 38th (last) place, and Custer was promoted to first as the official race winner in his #00 Ford.

Custer’s victory is his sixth victory of the season, which ties him with Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell atop the wins list. Richard Childress Racing’s Tyler Reddick, the other member of the “Big 3” aside of Custer and Bell, was promoted from third to second place in his #2 Chevrolet. He finished 1.068 seconds behind Custer.
Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney was promoted from fourth to third place in his #12 Ford. Bell was promoted from fifth to fourth in his #20 Toyota, and in his lone start of the 2019 season, JR Motorsports’ Dale Earnhardt Jr. was promoted from sixth to fifth in his #88 Chevrolet.
Stewart-Haas Racing’s Chase Briscoe, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Brandon Jones, JR Motorsports teammates Noah Gragson and Justin Allgaier and Team Penske’s Austin Cindric officially rounded out the top 10 by finishing in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #98 Ford, #19 Toyota, #9 Chevrolet, #7 Chevrolet and #12 Ford, respectively.
The only three drivers who led the race at any point were Hamlin, Reddick and Blaney, so Custer won the race without leading any of its 147 laps.
