NASCAR Cup Series: Denny Hamlin takes pole for 2019 Drydene 400

Denny Hamlin took the pole position for the opening race of the round of 12 of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, the Drydene 400, at Dover International Speedway.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin got the round of 12 of the four-round, 10-race 2019 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs off to a great start by taking the pole position for the Drydene 400 at Dover International Speedway with a new track record lap time.
This race is the fourth overall race of the playoffs and the 30th race of the 36-race season.
Hamlin took the pole position for this 400-lap race around the four-turn, 1.0-mile (1.609-kilometer) high-banked Monster Mile oval in Dover, Delaware by recording a top lap time of 21.559 seconds (166.984 miles per hour) in the single-car qualifying session for this race in his #11 Toyota.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson qualified in second place in his #42 Chevrolet and appeared to have Hamlin beat until coming off of turn four to complete his lap at 21.562 seconds (166.960 miles per hour), just 0.003 seconds (0.024 miles per hour) slower than Hamlin.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Martin Truex Jr., the winner of the May race at Dover International Speedway, qualified in third place in his #19 Toyota ahead of Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick, the highest qualifying Ford driver for this race, in fourth in his #4 Ford.
Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott, the winner of last year’s playoff race at the track, qualified in fifth place in his #9 Chevrolet ahead of teammate William Byron in sixth in his #24 Chevrolet.
Rounding out the top 10 in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place were Stewart-Haas Racing’s Aric Almirola, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Erik Jones, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kurt Busch and Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney in their #10 Ford, #20 Toyota, #1 Chevrolet and #12 Ford, respectively.
