Lewis Hamilton secured his 10th victory of the 2019 Formula 1 season by winning the Mexican Grand Prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton didn’t secure his sixth Formula 1 world championship in the Mexican Grand Prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, but he did secure his 10th victory of the 2019 season, giving him five 10-win seasons in the last six years.

Hamilton started the 71-lap race around the 17-turn, 2.674-mile (4.303-kilometer) Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course in Mexico City, Mexico in third place, and he won it by 1.766 seconds over Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in second.

Hamilton made a one-stop pit strategy work to his advantage to steal a victory in a weekend thought to play to the advantage of Ferrari and Aston Martin Red Bull Racing.

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas finished in third place ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, the race polesitter, in fourth after Leclerc’s second pit stop resulted in a delay of several very valuable seconds that he could ultimately not get back on the track.

Red Bull Racing teammates Alexander Albon, a rookie, and Max Verstappen finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

Verstappen recovered to finish in sixth place after first-lap contact with Hamilton sent him off the track and after one of his tires went down as a result of contact with Bottas. He fell a lap off the lead lap in 20th place at a track where he had led 138 of the last 142 laps and won both of the last two races entering the weekend.

Verstappen initially took the pole position for the race, but he was demoted to fourth place on the starting grid as a result of the fact that he did not slow down for the yellow flags that were displayed when Bottas crashed to end the qualifying session.

Mexican driver Sergio Perez of SportPesa Racing Point finished as the “best of the rest” in seventh place. Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo finished in eighth.

Scuderia Toro Rosso teammates Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly originally finished in ninth and 10th place, respectively. But because Kvyat made contact with Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg on the final lap of the race in a battle for ninth and spun him out, he was issued a 10-second time penalty. As a result, Gasly was promoted to ninth ahead of Hulkenberg in 10th and Kvyat out of the points in 11th.

This race featured three lead changes among three drivers. Hamilton led 28 laps while Vettel led 23 and Leclerc led 20. Alfa Romeo Racing’s Kimi Raikkonen and McLaren rookie Lando Norris were the only two drivers who started the race but failed to finish it. Eight of the 18 drivers who finished it finished on the lead lap.
