Formula 1: 5 drivers fighting for their careers in 2020
Daniil Kvyat
Following a successful return to Formula 1, Daniil Kvyat has shown in recent weeks that the “torpedo” reputation that defined his first stint in the sport was not without merit. In both Mexico and the United States, Kvyat picked up time penalties for overly aggressive overtaking moves, and with only one point to his name since Italy, the Russian is starting to look like the number two driver at Toro Rosso.
With 27 points and podium to his name by the summer break, Kvyat’s return had been a great story for Formula 1. However, since he was overlooked for a promotion to Red Bull, with Albon instead getting the nod, his form has struggled and a return to the senior team is looking less and less likely. Furthermore, Helmut Marko has now hinted the final Red Bull seat will be offered to either Gasly or Albon.
While he has a seat for next year, Kvyat needs to start showing he is a better option than Gasly if he is to be retained for much longer. Much like Gasly, Kvyat has had his chance with the big team and been demoted, and while both represent good options for Toro Rosso, it is unlikely that Red Bull will hold onto them if they are able to source new young talent.
The relative form of Gasly compared to Kvyat since they became teammates means the Russian is under slightly greater threat, but both need to find top form next year if they are to be seen as future options for Red Bull.
