Romain Grosjean

After retaining his seat for 2020 somewhat against the odds, Romain Grosjean will once again be under huge pressure to prove his worth next season. He was comprehensively beaten by teammate Kevin Magnussen in 2018 and with just eight points so far this year, he has once again trailed the Dane. His qualifying speed is still good, but his mistakes are far too common for a driver in a team that are fighting for every point.

Given the struggles that Haas have faced this season, Grosjean could have felt slightly aggrieved to be jettisoned by the team he has been with since they came into Formula 1 in 2016, but with Nico Hulkenberg still unattached, it is not hard to imagine the German driver getting more out of the car.

Grosjean has retired on seven occasions this season and only finished in the points on three. These retirements included a clash with Magnussen at Silverstone, and the relationship between the two drivers continues to be a point of contention within the team.

Haas have had a nightmare year after a few steady seasons of progress and Grosjean will hope that 2020 can bring more opportunities for him to show his skill. He has been on the podium 10 times in his Formula 1 career, and with the right machinery, he be an effective driver. Whether Haas can give him the package to compete closer to the front remains to be seen, but what is certain is that he will need a better 2020 season if he wants to see the new regulations in 2021.
