NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Newman is awake and speaking with family and doctors following his horrific crash, according to Roush Fenway Racing.

The NASCAR community watched in horror on Monday evening as Roush Fenway Racing’s Ryan Newman went from leading the Daytona 500 with the checkered flag in sight to landing on his roof and skidding for several hundreds yards on along the Daytona International Speedway track.

Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney, committed to pushing his fellow Ford driver to a win over Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin, locked bumpers with the #6 Ford of Newman, and that sent Newman spinning up the track.

Newman’s car smashed into the SAFER barrier before flipping onto its roof. But the scariest part of the incident took place when the oncoming #32 Ford driven by Go Fas Racing’s Corey LaJoie was unable to avoid the airborne #6 machine and smashed into the driver’s side.
