NASCAR: Alan Gustafson injured in mountain biking accident
By Asher Fair
Alan Gustafson, the NASCAR Cup Series crew chief for Chase Elliott at Hendrick Motorsports, was injured in a mountain biking accident and showed up to Auto Club Speedway in a sling.
While he is at Auto Club Speedway this weekend to perform his regular duties as the crew chief for Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott in this Sunday afternoon’s Auto Club 400 NASCAR Cup Series race, Alan Gustafson is in a sling.
The 44-year-old Ormond Beach, Florida native was injured in a mountain biking accident when on a solo ride around Laguna Beach, California.
He sustained multiple injuries, including a torn AC joint, a hairline fracture in his clavicle, and with no skin left on my arms and elbows.

But while this was the case, he has stated that there is “not much they can do for it” aside or surgery or letting it heal on its own.
For now, it will have to heal on its own, because now he is at the four-turn, 2.0-mile (3.219-kilometer) oval in Fontana, California with the #9 team for this Sunday afternoon’s race, as he would be on any other weekend — and he is there after picking himself up and walking 2.5 miles back off of the trail while carrying his bike.
Here is what he had to say about the ordeal, according to NASCAR.
"“I wrecked my mountain bike while riding in Laguna. It was pretty gnarly. I have a torn AC joint and a hairline fracture in my clavicle, along with no skin left on my arms and elbows.“Getting dressed this morning was pretty hard, and don’t get me started on the shower. … Not much they can do for it. Surgery, or leave it alone and it can heal itself. It’s a race weekend so here I am, and I’ll be fine.”"
The qualifying session for the third race on the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series schedule is set to be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1 from Auto Club Speedway beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET this afternoon, and the Auto Club 400 itself is set to be broadcast live from the track on Fox beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET tomorrow afternoon.
