Part 3 – Indy 500 and Phoenix package

BTF: Finally, are you actively working on competing in the Indy 500, and if not this year, is it something you would be interested in at some point in the future?

Busch: I’ve said for a while that I would like to run in the Indy 500 in the right situation, but there’s nothing in the works as of right now.

BTF: Thank you again for your time today, and best wishes on a great season not only in Cup but in Xfinity to hit 100 wins and Trucks to secure that $100,000 for your Bundle of Joy Fund.

Busch: Thanks, appreciate it.

EXTRA: Busch also answered questions about this past weekend’s Cup Series race and the new short track package at Phoenix Raceway before it took place. He ended up finishing in third place behind Team Penske’s Joey Logano and Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick. Here is what he had to say before the weekend.

More from NASCAR Cup Series

BTF: You were one of the biggest critics of last year’s short track package. What do you expect from this year’s changes to that package, starting this weekend in Phoenix?

Busch: I think that’s two-fold. Obviously, it’s because it’s the first race with that lower downforce package if that’s what we call it and people are going to want to know what to expect in the upcoming races with that, I don’t know if we really know how it’s going to turn out so let’s just watch and see. I also look at it as of course it’s important and everybody is going to feel like it’s important because everybody right now feels like they have a shot to make the final four because it’s so early in the season. There should be an added emphasis by people to go out there and learn a few things, try a few things and get themselves ready for the end of the year being at the final race.

BTF: With the title race now at Phoenix, do you consider this weekend’s race to be one of the most important races of the regular season as far as being an indication of what to expect come November?

Busch: I always look forward to Phoenix, it’s always fun and a good place for us. Lately, we’ve been able to really pick up on some things that help us there that have made us better there the last few times and now this package is different. I think that will lend itself back into a couple years ago I guess. Felt like we were just kind of hitting on something there and was a big racier through traffic and such. We’ll see how all that goes.
