NASCAR: 3 weird statistics so far in 2020
By Asher Fair
Breaking it down
Only six drivers are on both lists, and only the top two are in the same positions. As for the other four drivers on each list, some of them rank nowhere near where they rank on the other list.
Jimmie Johnson, who ranks fifth in points, is tied for 11th place in average finish. Ryan Blaney, who ranks sixth in points, ranks all the way down in 17th in average finish. Aric Almirola, who is tied for seventh in points, is tied with Johnson in average finish. Brad Keselowski, who is tied for ninth in points, is tied with Johnson and Almirola in average finish.

Denny Hamlin, who is tied for third in average finish, is tied for 11th place in points. Clint Bowyer, who ranks fifth in average finish, ranks all the way down in 13th in points. Chris Buescher, who ranks seventh in average finish, ranks 14th in points, and Kyle Busch, who ranks ninth in average finish, is tied with Hamlin in points.
Among the 14 drivers included in one or both of these lists, the average difference between their position in points and average finish is 4.71. Including only the 12 whose positions changed at all, that average difference is a whopping 5.50.
Hopefully each and every one of these statistics will change in the near future by way of NASCAR action resuming as soon as possible in safe conditions, and well beyond just today’s race.
