5 NASCAR documentaries that should be made
2. Jimmie Johnson – 2020
Jimmie Johnson will surely go down as one of the greatest drivers to ever strap into a NASCAR stock car. His seven championships have him tied for the most ever with two other greats, Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty.
He has earned 83 career wins, which is tied for sixth highest win total of all-time and is by far the highest by any active driver.
Shortly after the 2019 Cup Series season ended, Johnson made the announcement that he will be retiring from full-time competition after the 2020 season, so this would be the perfect season for a documentary that focuses on him.
The format could be similar to that of The Last Dance. There could be flashbacks to all of the seasons in which Johnson won the championship, he could take us through what it was like in each of those years, and there could also be interviews from people who helped him along the way, such as former teammates Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. as well longtime crew chief Chad Knaus.
This is a little different that the rest of my suggestions, given that the 2020 season isn’t over yet and we don’t know how it will end, especially with the current state of the country brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.
But hearing from Johnson on what has been different about his final season compared to his previous years and how he handled himself during the shutdown and the rise of iRacing could be extremely interesting as well. It would make for some very entertaining stories and television.
