NASCAR: Kurt Busch made a hilarious mistake in Charlotte qualifying
By Asher Fair
Kurt Busch made a hilarious mistake en route to taking his first NASCAR Cup Series pole position since 2018 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
For the first time since Sunday, October 14, 2018 and for the first time since he signed with Chip Ganassi Racing ahead of last year, Kurt Busch is set to start a NASCAR Cup Series race from the pole position.
Busch took the pole position for this evening’s Coca-Cola 600, the longest race of the 2020 season, at Charlotte Motor Speedway by recording a top lap time of 29.790 seconds (181.269 miles per hour) in his #1 Chevrolet in the single-car qualifying session around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) oval in Concord, North Carolina.
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the driver of the GearWrench-sponsored machine leading up to his impressive one-lap pole run.

With social distancing in place amid the coronavirus pandemic, the 41-year-old Las Vegas, Nevada native had to handle his own gear leading up to this session.
Unfortunately, he put on last year’s firesuit as opposed to this year’s.
If you take a look at the image above, that is the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series logo used from 2017 to 2019 when Monster Energy was the title sponsor of the Cup Series.
They no longer hold that role, as the Cup Series no longer has a title sponsor.
Busch later posted about the miscue, comparing the two firesuits side by side.

In his defense, they do look nearly identical, as you might expect given that GearWrench was his primary sponsor for last year’s running of the Coca-Cola 600.
He did correct the mistake prior to the race itself.
Fortunately, Busch can actually “afford” to make this mistake from a sponsorship standpoint, as Monster Energy is actually his regular primary sponsor.
