NASCAR: A.J. Allmendinger on standby for Austin Dillon at Homestead
By Asher Fair
A.J. Allmendinger is again on standby for Austin Dillon at Richard Childress Racing for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
For the second NASCAR Cup Series race in a row, A.J. Allmendinger is on standby for Austin Dillon at Richard Childress Racing.
Should Austin’s wife Whitney go into labor tomorrow with baby Ace RC Dillon when the Cup Series is slated to run the Dixie Vodka 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Allmendinger would be slated to drive the #3 Chevrolet.
Allmendinger has not competed in a Cup Series race since he competed full-time for JTG Daugherty Racing in the 2018 season.

He had been on standby for Dillon at Martinsville Speedway for this past Wednesday evening’s race for this reason. Dillon did end up exiting the race early, but that came due to medical reasons and he was not replaced.
Allmendinger’s most recent start came in the 2018 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway when he finished in 19th place. His best finish at the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) oval in Homestead, Florida is fifth, which he recorded in 2010 driving for Richard Petty Motorsports.
The 38-year-old Los Gatos, California native competed part-time for Kaulig Racing in the Xfinity Series last season, and he has done so this season as well.
He is slated to compete in tomorrow’s Xfinity Series race at the track after winning last Saturday afternoon’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway for his first career NASCAR oval win.
Should Dillon need to be replaced by Allmendinger tomorrow afternoon, it is believed that he would be granted a playoff waiver and not lose his playoff eligibility over one missed start. He currently sits in 17th place in the championship standings, one position below the playoff cut line.
The Dixie Vodka 400 is set to be broadcast live on Fox beginning tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. ET.
