NASCAR has postponed Sunday’s GEICO 500 NASCAR Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway to Monday due to rain and lightning.

Yet again, NASCAR has been forced to alter the schedule of a race weekend due to inclement weather, this time at Talladega Superspeedway.

The GEICO 500, which was scheduled to begin on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. ET, has been postponed until tomorrow afternoon due to rain and lightning.

Like it was today, the race is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. ET on Fox. According to The Weather Channel, there is a 60% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day and a 50% chance of the same throughout the evening.

More from NASCAR Cup Series

After the first round of rain delayed the start of the race this afternoon, the Air Titans were sent out to dry the track, and the process was going smoothly.

But then more rain came, and with Talladega Superspeedway not having lights, there would not have been enough time to dry the track and then get a race in before the sun went down.

Cup Series races are deemed official after the first two stages or the halfway mark, whichever comes first, but NASCAR would not start a race with the intent of simply making it official.

This 188-lap race around the four-turn, 2.66-mile (4.281-kilometer) high-banked oval in Lincoln, Alabama would need to go 94 laps before being deemed official, as stage two is slated to end after lap 120.

This marks the second consecutive race at Talladega Superspeedway to be pushed back due to rain. The round of 12 playoff race at the track last season got started on Sunday, October 13, but it was suspended due to rain and finished on Monday, October 14. Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney won that race.
