Formula 1: Here are the cars without confirmed drivers for 2021
By Asher Fair
While several key driver confirmations have been made for the 2021 Formula 1 season, several teams still have an open seat or seats.
The 2020 Formula 1 season finally got underway back in early July, and 10 races have now been completed in it, with seven remaining on the schedule before a hopefully much shorter offseason between seasons.
A number of teams have already completely solidified their driver lineups for next year, with several having done so even before the delayed 2020 campaign got underway.
Ferrari signed Charles Leclerc through the 2024 season back in December and signed McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr. on a two-year deal to replace four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel after 2020.

McLaren confirmed that Lando Norris is indeed set to return while signing Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo to replace Sainz.
Renault, set to be rebranded as Alpine beginning next year, confirmed that two-time world champion Fernando Alonso is set to come out of retirement and replace Ricciardo alongside Esteban Ocon.
Williams have also confirmed that both of their current drivers, George Russell and rookie Nicholas Latifi, are slated to return to the team next year.
But even with all of those confirmations there are still a number of seats up for grabs on the 2021 grid.
Here’s a brief rundown.
Mercedes
While Valtteri Bottas is the only Mercedes driver under contract for next year, it is expected that six-time and likely soon-to-be seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton will sign an extension in the near future.
Red Bull
Max Verstappen is under contract through 2023, but Alexander Albon is currently without a deal to return to the organization in 2021.
Aston Martin
While only Vettel is under contract for the team next year having been confirmed as Sergio Perez’s replacement, it is practically a lock that Lance Stroll will remain with the team owned by his father Lawrence.
AlphaTauri
Pierre Gasly appears to be safe here, but nothing has been confirmed. Daniil Kvyat, on the other hand, could end up losing his seat if the team opt to make a change and go with somebody such as Formula 2 driver Yuki Tsunoda of the Red Bull Junior Team.
Alfa Romeo
Neither Kimi Raikkonen nor Antonio Giovinazzi are under contract for 2021, which could spell change in the organization, especially with the Ferrari Driver Academy trio of Mick Schumacher, Callum Ilott and Robert Shwartzman lurking in Formula 2 at the top of the driver standings.
Haas
The contracts of both Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean are set to expire at the end of the 2020 season, and while they make up what is tied for the longest tenured pairing in the sport with that of Mercedes, the team have hinted that change is on the horizon, potentially with one of the Ferrari juniors and a veteran such as Sergio Perez or Nico Hulkenberg.
All in all, 11 of the 20 seats among seven of the 10 teams on the 2021 Formula 1 grid have confirmed drivers while the other nine seats across six teams do not. Who will land the remaining open rides?
