Formula 1: Imola results, standings – Lewis Hamilton wins, Mercedes clinch
By Asher Fair
Lewis Hamilton won the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and Mercedes secured the 2020 Formula 1 world constructor championship at Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari.
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton secured his ninth victory of the 2020 Formula 1 season in the 17-race season’s 13th race at Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, and Mercedes clinched a record seventh consecutive world constructor title with his victory.
The victory was Hamilton’s third in a row and the 93rd of his career, extending the all-time record he set with his win last Sunday.
Hamilton started this 63-lap race the 21-turn, 3.05-mile (4.908-kilometer) road course in Imola, Emilia-Romagna, Italy in second place behind teammate Valtteri Bottas and quickly fell to third behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

But he utilized the overcut after Verstappen and Bottas pitted to inherit the lead. While he may have been able to pit under normal conditions and stayed out front, he was aided by a timely virtual safety car period caused by Renault’s Esteban Ocon retiring from the race with a mechanical issue on the side of the track.
This virtual safety car period did not come out right as Ocon was forced to retire. In fact, it came out right before Hamilton arrived ahead of the pit entrance, and it ended just as Hamilton concluded his pit stop.
He ended up winning the race by 5.783 seconds over in Bottas second place. Bottas fell to third after going off course and being passed by Verstappen after Verstappen had been pressuring him for much of the race, but a tire failure a few laps later ended Verstappen’s race and resulted in another safety car period.
Williams’ George Russell had a chance to secure his first career points finish with a top 10 result in his 34th start, but he crashed trying to put heat into his tires during the safety car period.
After not taking new tires during this safety car period, Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo jumped up to third place, and he held on to secure his second podium finish in the last three races with a third place effort ahead of AlphaTauri’s Daniil Kvyat in a season-high fourth.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished in fifth place ahead of Racing Point’s Sergio Perez, who has now finished in the top 10 in all 11 of his starts so far this season, in sixth.
McLaren rounded out the top eight with Carlos Sainz Jr. in seventh place and Lando Norris in eighth while Alfa Romeo rounded out the top 10 with Kimi Raikkonen in ninth and Antonio Giovinazzi in 10th.
