Possible 2021 Lewis Hamilton landing spots: #2 – Red Bull

If the battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in equal equipment is to happen before the former calls it a career, it is looking increasingly unlikely that it would be with Mercedes.

However, it could very well be at Red Bull. In fact, as unlikely as a Red Bull switch is for Hamilton, it probably won’t be at anywhere other than Red Bull if it does take place.

There are whispers that Hamilton’s future with the Brackley-based team may hinge on the decision of team boss Toto Wolff, who has nothing left to prove, having just led the team to their record seventh consecutive constructor and driver world championships.

While Valtteri Bottas, who has won nine races to Hamilton’s 39 since the two became teammates back in 2017, signed an extension with the team all the way back in early August, Hamilton remains unsigned for next year. On paper, that doesn’t make a ton of sense.

Would Hamilton, who recently broke Michael Schumacher’s all-time wins record of 91 and is poised to tie him in championships, really give up the chance to become a 100-time race winner and eight-time world champion, even if he does leave Mercedes?

Red Bull are undoubtedly keeping their eye on this situation — even if for no other reason than to see who Verstappen will need to beat next year at the Silver Arrows.

While it is hard to see the team wanting to deal with having two alphas on their hands like they would with Hamilton alongside Verstappen, the fact that this would strip Mercedes of their star and the fact that it would finally land a competitive driver in the team’s second car for the first time since 2018 could make it worth it.
