Mercedes have officially signed the reigning champion. But they have not signed that reigning Formula 1 champion.

Formula 1 Esports reigning champion Jarno Opmeer has signed with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Esports Team for the 2021 season, switching over from Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN.

Here is what Opmeer had to say about the matter, according to a release.

"“I can’t wait to start working with the Mercedes Team. Behind the scenes, we have already started working on our preparations for the Virtual Grands Prix. This is an extremely ambitious and talented team, and I’m going to try to get the maximum out of Esports this year.”"

Mercedes have also added Dani Moreno from McLaren Shadow. He and Opmeer are set to join Bono Huis, who competed for the team last year.

These moves come after Brendon Leigh left the team for the Ferrari Driver Academy Esports Team last week. Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN and McLaren Shadow are the only two teams with open seats ahead of the beginning of the season on Sunday, January 31.

As for that reigning Formula 1 champion, Lewis Hamilton is still working on a deal with the Silver Arrows to be back with the team for what would be a ninth consecutive season in 2021.

He has won the last four and six of the last seven world championships with the Brackley-based team, and the 2020 season saw him win a record-tying seventh world title. He is now tied with Michael Schumacher in that category, and the 2020 season also saw him pass Schumacher for the wins record. He has now won 95 races throughout his 14-year career.
