NASCAR: Ty Gibbs expands Xfinity Series schedule

Ty Gibbs, who was initially slated to run 10 races throughout the 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series season, is now set to run 14 more.

On Saturday evening at the Daytona International Speedway road course, Ty Gibbs became the first driver to win in his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut since Kurt Busch won at Texas Motor Speedway in 2006.

He became the first driver ever to do it without any Cup Series experience. In fact, of the five to do it previously, three were already Cup Series champions.

Gibbs, who competes full-time in the ARCA Menards Series, entered the 2021 season set to compete in 10 races behind the wheel of the #54 Toyota for his grandfather’s Xfinity Series team, despite having no previous experience in not just the Xfinity Series but the Truck Series either.

That didn’t matter, as he held off road course ace and reigning series champion Austin Cindric late to secure the victory in his first start.

As a result, he is set to compete in even more races throughout the 33-race season. Instead of competing in nine more races throughout the year, the 18-year-old Charlotte, North Carolina native is set to compete in 14 more events, all while continuing to compete full-time in ARCA.
