NASCAR: Ty Gibbs expands Xfinity Series schedule
By Asher Fair
Ty Gibbs, who was initially slated to run 10 races throughout the 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series season, is now set to run 14 more.
On Saturday evening at the Daytona International Speedway road course, Ty Gibbs became the first driver to win in his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut since Kurt Busch won at Texas Motor Speedway in 2006.
He became the first driver ever to do it without any Cup Series experience. In fact, of the five to do it previously, three were already Cup Series champions.
Gibbs, who competes full-time in the ARCA Menards Series, entered the 2021 season set to compete in 10 races behind the wheel of the #54 Toyota for his grandfather’s Xfinity Series team, despite having no previous experience in not just the Xfinity Series but the Truck Series either.
That didn’t matter, as he held off road course ace and reigning series champion Austin Cindric late to secure the victory in his first start.
As a result, he is set to compete in even more races throughout the 33-race season. Instead of competing in nine more races throughout the year, the 18-year-old Charlotte, North Carolina native is set to compete in 14 more events, all while continuing to compete full-time in ARCA.
Here is what he had to say in a statement.
"“Winning this past weekend in Daytona was really a dream come true for me. I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel again. I know I still have a lot to learn, but I have great teams behind me in both ARCA and Xfinity, and I’m so fortunate to have the opportunity to work with all of them. I’m just really excited for the rest of the year.”"
Here is a list of the 14 tracks, including five more road courses, at which Gibbs is slated to compete throughout the rest of the season, along with the date for each race.

The #54 Toyota is set to be shared by additional drivers in the other remaining 17 races on the schedule.
Ty Dillon, who drove the car in the season opener at Daytona International Speedway, is set to drive it in three more races.
Kyle Busch is set to drive it in five races, as he usual does, and both Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin are slated to drive it in one.
That leaves seven races TBD for the team’s “star car”.
