LeBron James officially a NASCAR team owner?

It’s official; LeBron James is now a part of Fenway Sports Group’s ownership group. The Roush Fenway Racing NASCAR team is a subsidiary of said group.

Last month, it was reported that Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James had been added as a partner of the Fenway Sports Group, which is the parent company of the Boston Red Sox and and Liverpool Football Club. The four-time NBA champion had previously held around a 2% share of the Liverpool soccer franchise since 2011.

Such a partnership would also make him involved in the ownership of NASCAR Cup Series team Roush Fenway Racing.

Jack Roush’s Roush Racing formed a partnership with the Fenway Sports Group back in 2007, making Roush Fenway Racing one of the group’s subsidiaries.

Now this news is official, the sports company confirmed in a news release.

James, along with business partner Maverick Carter and their longtime business associate, Paul Wachter, have become a part of the Fenway Sports Group ownership group.

Principal owner John W. Henry, Chairman Tom Werner and President Mike Gordon make up the Fenway Sports Group leadership.

Here is what the group’s leadership had to say in a statement.

"“We are also pleased to welcome to our ownership group LeBron, Maverick and Paul, with whom we have enjoyed a successful collaboration for well over a decade. Their addition is an important milestone for FSG and expands and deepens a longtime friendship and relationship that began in 2010.”"

While this ownership role isn’t nearly as involved as that of fellow NBA legend and fellow number 23 Michael Jordan with 23XI Racing, LeBron James can now technically say that he is playing a role in the ownership of a NASCAR Cup Series team.

Roush Fenway Racing’s two Cup Series drivers are Ryan Newman and Chris Buescher. They drive the #6 Ford and the #17 Ford, respectively, but it’s a pure coincidence that these two numbers happen to add up to 23.

Through the first seven races of the 2021 season, Buescher sits in 17th place in the point standings, four points below the playoff cut line, while Newman sits in 19th, 19 points behind his teammate, following a season-best fifth place finish on dirt at Bristol Motor Speedway.
