Ryan Vargas spoke about his rookie Xfinity Series season so far, and the possibility of Alvin Kamara returning to NASCAR.

Ryan Vargas, whose sponsorship deal with Swann Security led to Best Buy returning to NASCAR for this Saturday afternoon’s Alsco Uniforms 300 Xfinity Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway, was also involved in New Orleans Saints Pro Bowl running back Alvin Kamara officially getting involved in the sport earlier this year.

Kamara’s chain of juice bars in Louisiana, The Big Squeezy, served as the primary sponsor of Vargas’s #6 JD Motorsports with Gary Keller Chevrolet in February’s Xfinity Series race at the Daytona International Speedway road course.

“I’ve chatted with him a little bit,” Vargas told Beyond the Flag. “My team is open to working with him and hopefully an opportunity comes up in the future.”

Vargas, who is in his first season as a full-time Xfinity Series driver, has competed in 10 of the season’s first 11 races. He missed last weekend’s inaugural race at Circuit of the Americas, but he is set to return for this Saturday afternoon’s 200-lap race around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) oval in Concord, North Carolina with Swann Security and Best Buy.

The 20-year-old La Mirada, California native spoke about the biggest lesson he has learned so far in his rookie season and whether or not the experience has lived up to his expectations.

“Adapt to circumstances and work hard,” he said. “As a rookie, it’s a big challenge. I’ve learned to back myself and the team up. Every lap I learn something new. It’s what I expected and then some. I knew it was going to be a really crazy difficult challenge, but I was ready for the challenge and level up in my career as any racer should want to do. The exposure has been unexpected and I’ve been lucky to work with notable brands like Best Buy and Swann.”

Vargas has managed to finish nine of his 10 races so far this season, with a top finish of 18th place in the season opener at Daytona International Speedway.

“The goal is to finish them all,” he said. “What matters is bringing myself and the car home in one piece. Finishing races just as important as finishing position. It’s important to our team to bring home clean race cars, and that’s our goal each and every week. I want to prove I can race and be smart on the race track!”

He believes that starting races is one area upon which he can improve, but part of the reason for his struggle in this area thus far has been a lack of practice.

“Being better at the start of races, but it comes down to more experience and track time,” he admitted. “The more laps and experience I get the better I will be. Racing is definitely a unique dynamic and you get better with time. I need to keep racing and practicing to set myself up for a continued bright future.”
