Chase Elliott has been disqualified from Sunday’s Ally 400, the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville Superspeedway.

Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott entered Sunday’s Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway riding a streak of four consecutive top three finishes in the NASCAR Cup Series, five including his third place finish in the All-Star Race at Texas Motor Speedway.

He finished in third place at Dover International Speedway and won the inaugural race at Circuit of the Americas before finishing in second at both Charlotte Motor Speedway at Sonoma Raceway.

Elliott got the inaugural race at Nashville Superspeedway off to a good start, winning the first stage to collect his second stage win of the year and to add a playoff point to his tally. He ran well throughout much of the rest of the 300-lap race around the four-turn, 1.333-mile (2.145-kilometer) oval in Lebanon, Tennessee, but a late tire issue led to him fading to 13th place.

And after the race, it got even worse for the driver of the #9 Chevrolet. Because his car had five loose lug nuts after the race, he was disqualified.

Instead of scoring 38 points (24 with his 13th place finish, 10 from his stage one victory, and four from his seventh place finish in stage two), Elliott has scored only one point, and he is classified as having finished in 39th (last) in stage one, 39th in stage two, and 39th in the race itself.

As a result, everybody who finished behind Elliott in stage one, stage two, and the race has been promoted by one position, netting quite a few drivers additional stage points/points (top 10 drivers in each stage score points, from 10 to 1).

Most notably, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kurt Busch originally finished the first stage in second place, so he is now the official stage winner and will collect a playoff point because of it. Elliott will not be awarded that playoff point, which would have been his seventh of the season.
