Lewis Hamilton tied an all-time Formula 1 record by winning the British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit, but it’s a record that may not last.

Lost in the action of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit two Sundays ago was the fact that Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton tied an all-time Formula 1 record by winning his home race following a late pass of erstwhile leader Charles Leclerc of Ferrari.

The seven-time world champion made contact with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen on the opening lap of the 52-lap race around the 18-turn, 3.661-mile (5.892-kilometer) road course in Silverstone, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom, eliminating the 23-year-old Dutchman from the race.

Hamilton was issued a 10-second penalty for causing the collision, but he was able to overcome it and win the race and close the gap to Verstappen atop the driver standings.

As a result, he is now an eight-time British Grand Prix winner, and no driver is a nine-time winner of any race in Formula 1 history.

Hamilton also won the British Grand Prix in 2008, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020. This marks just the third time in Formula 1 history that a driver has become an eight-time winner of a race, and Hamilton has now done it twice.

Last year, he won the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring for the eighth time, having also won it in 2007, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2018 and 2019. Before then, the only eight-time winner of a Formula 1 race was fellow seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, who won the French Grand Prix at Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours eight times (1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006).

But this is a record that Hamilton could very well break in the near future — this weekend, perhaps.

The Hungarian Grand Prix is scheduled to take place at the Hungaroring on Sunday, August 1, and Hamilton will be looking to win for the fourth straight year at the track, a win which would make him the first ever nine-time winner of a single event.

WynnBET lists Verstappen as the favorite to win this race at -115, while Hamilton is listed close behind as the second favorite at +150.
