Fernando Alonso now leads Formula 1 in one stat category
By Asher Fair
In Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso inherited the lead of a statistical category among active Formula 1 drivers.
A Hungarian Grand Prix that saw vintage Fernando Alonso in his late battle for fourth place with Lewis Hamilton also saw the two-time Formula 1 world champion shoot to the lead of a statistical category among the sport’s active drivers.
Alonso was able to finish this race in fourth place, his best result since he finished on the podium at the Hungaroring driving for Ferrari back in 2014, after avoiding the opening lap chaos caused by Valtteri Bottas in turn one.
But one driver who was not able to avoid that chaos was Lando Norris, the man who replaced Alonso at McLaren when he “retired” after the 2018 season.

Norris was forced to retire from the race after his McLaren took significant contact from Bottas’s Mercedes and was then sent into the side of the Red Bull of Max Verstappen. This ended a series-high streak of 15 consecutive point-scoring finishes for Norris that had dated back to last season, and now leading that category is none other than Alonso himself.
Alonso has scored points in each of the last six races after starting the season, his first season out of retirement, with just two point-scoring results in five events. His results in the last six races include finishes in every position from fourth to 10th place except for fifth.
Here’s a list of those six results.
- Azerbaijan Grand Prix: 6th
- French Grand Prix: 8th
- Styrian Grand Prix: 9th
- Austrian Grand Prix: 10th
- British Grand Prix: 7th
- Hungarian Grand Prix: 4th
His average finish during this span is 7.33.
Will Alonso continue this series-best streak in the Belgian Grand Prix at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps? Alonso has competed in this race on 15 occasions and scored three podium finishes. It is set to be broadcast live on ESPN beginning at 9:00 a.m. ET on Sunday, August 29.
