Possible John Hunter Nemechek landing spots: No. 2 – Joe Gibbs Racing

While Kyle Busch may want him back next year, there is no guarantee that John Hunter Nemechek will turn down an opportunity at one of NASCAR’s higher levels if he ends up getting the chance to make the jump back up.

One of the potential landing spots he could have is Joe Gibbs Racing’s Toyota Xfinity Series team, and for multiple reasons.

First of, we know that Busch is done competing in the Xfinity Series. Will will the team turn the #54 Toyota, known as the “star car”, into an entry that runs with only one full-time driver?

It is practically a given that Ty Gibbs, who has impressed as a part-time driver for the team this season, will receive a promotion to full-time next year. But that may not be the end of the story.

Harrison Burton is in his second season behind the wheel of the #20 Toyota, but he is set to leave the organization at the end of the year and move to the Cup Series as the replacement for Matt DiBenedetto behind the wheel of the #21 Ford at Wood Brothers Racing.

Could the #20 Toyota be where Nemechek ends up, assuming Gibbs gets the #54 Toyota full-time (or vice versa)?
