NASCAR getting a new full-time Cup team for 2022
By Asher Fair
GMS Racing had already announced plans to compete in the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season. Now they have confirmed a full-time effort.
Back in June, GMS Racing confirmed that they are set to make their NASCAR Cup Series debut in the 2022 season when the Next Gen car is launched.
The team formerly known as Gallagher Motorsports have competed in NASCAR on some level in every year since 2013, but they have never previously competed in any races at the top level.
They shared the following clip.
After this announcement, there was still quite a bit that had not been determined about the team’s commitment to the Cup Series in 2022, including who their driver or drivers would be and if they would be competing on a full-time basis.
Now we know that they are set to run full-time in 2022. Ty Dillon, who competed full-time in the Cup Series for Germain Racing from 2017 to 2020, is their most likely driver, according to Fox Sports’ Bob Pockrass.
And we not only know that they plan to compete full-time next year, but they are aiming to field their entry with one of the series’ 36 charters.
This key question is now this: from which team will they buy a charter to field their full-time entry?
There are rumors of Front Row Motorsports potentially parting with at least one of their two charters, and StarCom Racing recently sold their charter to an unconfirmed buyer.
Additionally, Rick Ware Racing have floated the possibility of leasing out at least one of their four charters for 2022.
GMS Racing are not the only team in the market for a charter, however, and the search for charters has been a key focal point of this year’s silly season.
23XI Racing are still seeking a second charter for their recently announced #45 Toyota for Kurt Busch, and Spire Motorsports are reportedly looking to buy a second one after selling two of their current three to Kaulig Racing for next year; they are the rumored buyer of StarCom Racing’s charter.
