NASCAR: The only confirmed charter changes for 2022
By Asher Fair
There has been a lot of recent talk about teams in the market for charters for the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season. But what is actually confirmed?
With silly season for the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season having somewhat cooled down as far as the driver market is concerned, there is still an unanswered question for a number of teams, and that question has to do with charters.
We have heard quite a bit about charters recently, with the focus on a number of teams. Specifically, 23XI Racing, Front Row Motorsports, GMS Racing, Rick Ware Racing, Spire Motorsports and StarCom Racing have been the subject of this chatter.
But there has proven to be a fine line between what is confirmed and what is still up in the air.
This was indicated quite clearly by the disappointment experienced by 23XI Racing when their deal to purchase a second charter from Front Row Motorsports fell through, despite having said before that everything was set regarding Kurt Busch’s #45 Toyota for next year.
So what has actually been confirmed as far as charter transactions for the 2022 season are concerned?
Take a look.
Spire Motorsports
2021 – Three charters
- #7 Chevrolet
- #77 Chevrolet
- #99 Chevrolet (leased to Trackhouse Racing Team)
Spire Motorsports have sold the charters used to run the #77 Chevrolet and the #99 Chevrolet to Kaulig Racing.
Kaulig Racing
2021 – No charters (no full-time cars)
Kaulig Racing have purchased two charters from Spire Motorsports to run the #16 Chevrolet and the #TBD Chevrolet in 2022. This will mark their first time as a full-time team in the Cup Series.
Trackhouse Racing Team
2021 – Leasing a charter from Spire Motorsports
- #99 Chevrolet
With their current charter not available for next year, Trackhouse Racing Team have announced that they will acquire Chip Ganassi Racing and their two charters next year to run the #1 Chevrolet (currently a Chip Ganassi Racing car) and the #99 Chevrolet.
Chip Ganassi Racing
2021 – Two charters
- #1 Chevrolet
- #42 Chevrolet
Chip Ganassi Racing have announced that they will be acquired by Trackhouse Racing Team after the 2021 season, and this acquisition includes the team’s two charters. A key change to note is that the #1 Chevrolet, but not the #42 Chevrolet, is set to join the #99 Chevrolet at the Justin Marks and Pitbull-owned operation for 2022.
Everything else is still in the rumor phase.
23XI Racing are still looking for a charter with the Front Row Motorsports deal having fallen through, and GMS Racing seem to have a charter deal lined up for 2022, but with nothing officially announced.
StarCom Racing appear to have sold their charter to Spire Motorsports, but again, nothing has been confirmed, and even if it is, Spire Motorsports could end up leasing out this charter instead of running it for one of their own cars. Rick Ware Racing are among the potential lessors for teams on the hunt for a charter as well.
