Possible landing spots for Ty Gibbs: No. 2 – #20 Toyota

We know for a fact that Ty Gibbs will not drive the #19 Toyota in the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series season, as Brandon Jones is set to return to the team for a fifth consecutive season behind the wheel of this car.

So we will skip that option and head straight to the #20 Toyota.

Keeping with the theme of departures from Joe Gibbs Racing, Harrison Burton is set to move on after driving the #20 Toyota in each of the last two seasons. In fact, Jones is the only one of the team’s three full-time drivers set to return to the team in 2022.

Burton received a promotion to the Cup Series and is set to drive for Wood Brothers Racing as the replacement for Harrison Burton behind the wheel of the #21 Ford next year.

The “star car” has been the #54 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing since the start of the 2020 season. But for four years in a row leading up to 2020, it was the #18 Toyota which was used as the “star car”, with the #20 Toyota serving as a second one in 2017.

In 2016, 2018 and 2019, the #20 Toyota was used for a full-time driver, as opposed to the #18 Toyota.

With Joe Gibbs Racing downsizing from four cars to three for 2022, could we see the return of this particular trend?
