Following single-car qualifying, heat races and last-chance qualifiers, the starting lineup for the first NASCAR Cup Series race at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is set.

Following Saturday night’s single-car qualifying session, Sunday afternoon’s four heat races, and Sunday afternoon’s two last-chance qualifying races, the 23-car lineup for the first ever NASCAR Cup Series race at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Busch Light Clash exhibition race, is set.

The starting lineups for the four nine-car, 25-lap heat races at the purpose-built, quarter-mile oval inside the home of the USC Trojans football team were set based on speeds from yesterday evening’s two-lap, single-car qualifying session.

The top four drivers from each of those four races (16 total) advanced to the 150-lap main event, while the rest of the drivers were sent to one of the two 50-lap last-chance qualifying races. Three drivers from each of those races (six more, 22 total) advanced.

Because a 23rd spot was given to the highest driver in the 2021 standings, among those not already qualified, 2021 series runner-up Martin Truex Jr. of Joe Gibbs Racing opted not to take part in his last-chance qualifying race and settle for 23rd.

2021 champion Kyle Larson of Hendrick Motorsports had already locked in with a second place finish in his heat race, allowing Truex to make this decision without risking anything.

Ty Dillon initially won his last-chance qualifying race to lock up the 18th starting spot, but the Petty GMS Motorsports driver was penalized after it ended for jumping the final restart.

So Dillon failed to qualify, while fourth place finisher Harrison Burton ended up being promoted to third and locking in because of it. The Wood Brothers Racing rookie is set to start the main event in 22nd.

It’s hard to bet against Busch, considering the fact that the four polesitters for the four heat races led from green flag to checkered flag, but we did see some more action in the last-chance qualifying races. Plus, the main event is a 150-lap race, not a 25-lap race, and it is the true “last-chance” event of the weekend.
