IndyCar: 2022 St. Petersburg qualifying – Full starting lineup
By Asher Fair
The starting lineup for the 2022 IndyCar season opener on the streets of St. Petersburg is set following Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session.
After a five-month offseason, a new IndyCar season is scheduled to get underway tomorrow afternoon with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida.
This 100-lap race around the 14-turn, 1.8-mile (2.897-kilometer) temporary street circuit has traditionally hosted the season opener, but it hasn’t done so since 2019.
In 2020, it had to be postponed until the end of the modified 14-race season due to COVID-19-related restrictions, and in 2021, it was pushed back by about a month and a half for the same reason and was the second race of the 16-race season.
Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin is set to lead the field to the green flag to get the 2022 season underway after taking the pole position in Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session.
In the Firestone Fast Six, the third and final round of the qualifying session, McLaughlin topped the speed chart with a lap at 59.4821 seconds (108.940 miles per hour) behind the wheel of his #3 Chevrolet.
He beat out teammate and nine-time St. Petersburg polesitter Will Power, whose lap at 59.6058 seconds (108.714 miles per hour) behind the wheel of his #12 Chevrolet wasn’t enough.
Andretti Autosport’s Colton Herta led all Honda drivers, qualifying in third place behind the wheel of his #26 Honda. Teammate Romain Grosjean qualified in fifth behind the wheel of his #28 Honda in his first qualifying session as an Andretti Autosport driver.
Also in the Firestone Fast Six were Ed Carpenter Racing’s Rinus VeeKay, who qualified in fourth place behind the wheel of his #21 Chevrolet, and Meyer Shank Racing’s Simon Pagenaud, who qualified in sixth behind the wheel of his #60 Honda in his first qualifying session with Meyer Shank Racing.
