NASCAR: 2022 Las Vegas – Full starting lineup, updates
By Asher Fair
Keep tabs on Saturday’s qualifying session for the Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the third race of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season.
For the first time since September 2019, a qualifying session is set to take place for a NASCAR Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Las Vegas Motor Speedway, which is set to host this Sunday afternoon’s Pennzoil 400, hosted the second race on the 36-race 2020 schedule on Sunday, February 23. But it was the second of only four races prior to the unexpected 10-week hiatus caused by COVID-19-related restrictions, and qualifying was rained out.
After the series returned in mid-May, qualifying sessions were effectively canceled for the rest of the season, and they only returned in a limited capacity in 2021.
But in 2022, they are back on a full-time basis, and with a different format.
This format debuted last weekend at Auto Club Speedway. Drivers are separated into two groups, based on the previous race’s results (odd finishers in one group, even finishers in the other), and each driver gets a single-lap qualifying run, one driver at a time.
The top five drivers in each group then advance to the final round. The 10 drivers who advance to this next round all get an additional single-lap qualifying run — again, one driver at a time. The results of this round determine the top 10 in the starting lineup. The rest of the starting lineup is determined by the results of the first round.
Who will take the pole position for the 267-lap race around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) oval in Las Vegas, Nevada? Follow along with our qualifying updates.
