Keep tabs on Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session at Phoenix Raceway for the fourth race on the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series schedule.

The NASCAR Cup Series is set for the third and final race of the West Coast swing this Sunday afternoon at Phoenix Raceway, the Ruoff Mortgage 500.

Qualifying for this 312-lap race around the four-turn, 1.022-mile (1.645-kilometer) oval in Avondale, Arizona is set to take place this afternoon, and it is set to utilize the same single-car format used for the first two races of the West Coast swing.

Drivers are separated into two groups based on last week’s race results at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and each driver is set to run one lap in the first round.

The fastest five drivers from each group advance to the second round. In the second round, these 10 drivers each get one more single-lap run to set the top 10 in the starting lineup. The remaining positions are determined from the results of the first round; groups don’t matter in the determination of 11th place and back.

Phoenix Raceway is one of the few tracks which actually hosted a qualifying session during the 2021 season, but it has never hosted a qualifying session in which this format was used. It hosted a single-round, single-car session to set the starting lineup for November’s Championship 4 season finale.
