NASCAR: 2022 Talladega – Full starting lineup, updates

Keep tabs on Saturday’s qualifying session for Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, the first of two races at the track on the 2022 schedule.

The NASCAR Cup Series is set for the first race at Talladega Superspeedway of the Gen 7 era this Sunday, and for the first time since October 2019, qualifying is set to take place at the track.

The starting lineup for Sunday afternoon’s 188-lap GEICO 500, the 10th of 36 races on the 2022 schedule, around the four-turn, 2.66-mile (4.281-kilometer) high-banked oval in Lincoln, Alabama is set to be determined by a format which is slightly different than the format used at other oval tracks.

Unlike at other ovals, the drivers are not split up into groups; their speeds from the single-car qualifying session are compared to the speeds of all of the other drivers. The qualifying order is still determined by the usual formula, and each driver is set to make a single-lap run.

Like we saw back in February at Daytona International Speedway to set the starting lineups for the Bluegreen Vacations Duels (the two Daytona 500 qualifying races), the fastest 10 drivers from the first round advance to the second round, where each of those drivers makes another single-lap run to attempt to secure the pole position.
