The NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover Motor Speedway is scheduled to resume this afternoon after it was suspended on Sunday due to rain.

For the first time in the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season, a race is scheduled to take place on a Monday afternoon.

After the first 78 laps of Sunday afternoon’s 400-lap DuraMAX Drydene 400 presented by RelaDyne around the four-turn, 1.0-mile (1.609-kilometer) high-banked Dover Motor Speedway oval in Dover, Delaware, NASCAR threw the red flag for rain.

Following a lengthy delay, they announced that the remaining 322 laps of the season’s 11th race would be contested on Monday afternoon.

The race could not be deemed official as it did not reach the halfway mark.

This marks the first Monday race since last October, when the race at Talladega Superspeedway was also started on Sunday afternoon before it was halted due to rain. The remainder of it was pushed back to Monday afternoon. But the race, won by Bubba Wallace, still ended up being shortened by rain.

The last time a race was started on Sunday, suspended, and finished on Monday without being shortened was in February 2020. That race was the season-opening Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, which was won by Denny Hamlin.

Between those two races, five races were postponed from one day to another due to bad weather (May 2020 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, June 2020 at Talladega Superspeedway, October 2020 at Texas Motor Speedway, March 2021 at Bristol Motor Speedway, and April 2021 at Martinsville Speedway). Only two of these races were started on their scheduled dates.

The February 2021 season-opening Daytona 500 also started on Sunday and finished on Monday after a rain delay, but that was simply because of how late it ran into the night following the delay; it was never actually postponed from one day to the next.
