Keep tabs on Saturday’s qualifying session for Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway.
The 23rd of 36 races on the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series schedule is the season’s lone race at Michigan International Speedway, which had hosted two races per season for 47 straight years prior to last year.
This Sunday afternoon’s race is the FireKeepers Casino 400, a 200-lap race around the four-turn, 2.0-mile (3.219-kilometer) oval in Brooklyn, Michigan.
The qualifying format used to set the starting lineup for this race is the same format used to set the starting lineup for most other oval races on the calendar since it was introduced at the start of the season.
Based on the results of the most recent race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, the drivers are split up into two groups. However, the session is still a single-car session. The qualifying order is determined by the qualifying formula.
Each driver makes a single-lap qualifying attempt, and the fastest five drivers from each group advance to the final round, where they each make another single-lap attempt.
The speeds from the second round determine the top 10 in the starting lineup, and the speeds from the first round, irrespective of group, set the rest of it.
