Keep tabs on Saturday’s qualifying session for Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway, the Federated Auto Parts 400.

Richmond Raceway is set to host its second race of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season on Sunday afternoon after hosting its first back in early April, a race won by Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin.

This Sunday’s race, the Federated Auto Parts 400, is the 24th of 26 races on the regular season schedule. It is scheduled to be a 400-lap race around the four-turn, 0.75-mile (1.207-kilometer) oval in Richmond, Virginia.

The usual qualifying format is set to be used to determine the starting lineup for this race, with drivers split up into two groups based on the results of the most recent race at Michigan International Speedway.

The qualifying session is a single-car qualifying session, and the order is determined by the qualifying formula. However, unlike at most other venues, each driver gets two laps as opposed to one, due to the short length of the track. Each driver’s faster lap is used as their qualifying speed, and the fastest five drivers in each group advance to the second round.

The 10 drivers who advance to the second round make another two-lap run, and the faster of their two laps is again used as their qualifying speed.

The second round determines the top 10 in the starting lineup, and the remainder of the lineup is set based on round one speeds, irrespective of group.
