Possible future NASCAR driver-owners: No. 1 – Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s ownership in NASCAR is nothing new, as JR Motorsports has been around for several years in the Xfinity Series. The four-car operation has turned into a powerhouse in the series, with Earnhardt even fielding a part-time fifth car to make his return to the driver’s seat once each season.

But JR Motorsports’ move to the Cup Series has been long hinted at. Both Earnhardt and his sister Kelly Earnhardt Miller, who co-owns the team, have repeatedly indicated that the high price of charters is the primary reason behind the delay.

If the move takes place, it’s hard to imagine Earnhardt not returning to the driver’s seat at least one more time in the Cup Series. He has competed for his Xfinity Series team for years, and North Wilkesboro Speedway, a track he helped to revive, is back on the schedule starting next year.

It is worth mentioning that the 48-year-old has ruled out superspeedway racing at this stage in his career, and with the ongoing safety issues of the Next Gen car, his history with concussions could turn him away from making a Cup Series return, even in his own equipment.

As JR Motorsports continue to dominate in the Xfinity Series, a move to the sport’s top level will be talked about until it happens. Additionally, so will the elephant in the room of whether or not their owner can pilot a Cup car one more time.

If NASCAR improves the safety elements of the current car and JR Motorsports bite the bullet when it comes to a charter and enter the Cup Series, one of the most anticipated and popular returns could follow suit.
