Countries that could hold a NASCAR race: No. 2 – Mexico

NASCAR in Mexico is not a brand-new idea, with the Xfinity Series having raced at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez before and the Mexico Series competing in the country as well.

The Xfinity Series hasn’t competed in Mexico since 2008, and while the Mexico Series is still running, the crossover between that and the national series is rare, with Daniel Suarez being the only driver to have made multiple starts in both.

Suarez’s Cup Series team, Trackhouse Racing Team, initiated PROJECT91 this season to bridge the motorsport gap between national and international drivers. Taking the #91 Chevrolet to Mexico could be a beneficial move for the team, the sport, and the driver.

Steve O’Donnell reiterated the sport’s interest in a race in Mexico on an episode of Corey LaJoie’s Stacking Pennies podcast, naming cities such as Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara as possible locations.

A race in Mexico would add to the diversity of the existing schedule as well. With a new street course race in Chicago, Illinois and a return to grassroots short track racing at North Wilkesboro Speedway, the sport has shown its desire for innovation while upholding tradition.

NASCAR showcasing its drivers in Mexico could very well be the next move that checks both boxes in the coming years.
