Possible Nyck de Vries replacements: No. 3 – Ayumu Iwasa

Ayumu Iwasa has also been mentioned as another potential candidate to potentially replace Nyck de Vries. While his chances may not be as high as Liam Lawson’s, the Japanese driver has also been developing well over the last couple of seasons.

He is currently sitting in third place in the Formula 2 standings and has already equaled his win total from all of last season.

Iwasa’s steady progression in the FIA circuit has made him one of Red Bull’s best junior drivers and does make him a viable candidate to replace de Vries if AlphaTauri opt to move on from him.

Additionally, Helmut Marko named the 21-year-old as one of the academy drivers who could be in line to join the Red Bull sister team. If Iwasa does manage to continue running better than expected in Formula 2, it could come down to a very tight battle between him and Lawson as to who could be the one to join Yuki Tsunoda at the Faenza-based team.

Given that both young drivers have been doing quite well to open the 2023 season, it could come down to some very minute details as to who could be selected to replace the Dutchman at AlphaTauri. Both drivers are talented and have very good chances of finding themselves with careers in Formula 1.
