Racing in the Rain?

The 2001 Winston Cup Series season was marred at the start by the unfortunate death of Dale Earnhardt. The remainder of the season would be dedicated to him, and the best tribute the drivers could give was a great season of racing. And the 2001 edition of The Winston was no exception to that.

Much like the 2016 all-star weekend, the weather would play a role in the race at hand. Rain was in the area of Charlotte Motor Speedway, and NASCAR officials had hoped to get the race started before the rain could have any role in it. Unfortunately, those plans backfired, as many of the top cars in the field wrecked in turn one because of a wet track.

Then, something very special happened. Only in the All-Star Race could NASCAR allow cars that wrecked out in an incident caused by Mother Nature to bring out the backup cars to race. It created quite the stir for sure.
