Red Bull GRC Washington DC belonged to Scott Speed, who gave Volkswagen its first victory on the track while teammate Tanner Foust came third.

Volkswagen continued its Red Bull Global Rallycross dominance on Saturday, as defending GRC champion Scott Speed drove virtually unscathed to capture his second consecutive victory.

Speed held off a determined effort from 2014 GRC Washington winner Patrik Sandell to reach the top step of the podium, while his teammate – and championship leader – Tanner Foust had to literally fight his way to third place.

“Thank you so much to the fans who came out here in our nation’s capital. There’s no question that this is the race that we all look forward to the most,” Speed said through a league statement after his victory.

“It’s such great racing here, and we are back in the [championship] hunt—two wins and we are on a great roll!”

Speed swept his GRC Washington heat, semifinal and the final to keep Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross unbeaten in heat and semifinal competition this season.

But Foust got in trouble early during Saturday’s final as his usual great start off the line evaporated in the presence of Speed, Sandell and Brian Deegan.

Foust was shuffled back to fourth position and spent all ten laps trading blows with Deegan – finally prevailing on the final lap when Deegan went wide and contact with Foust further knocked him into a tire barrier.

GRC Washington was not a great race for championship runner-up Steve Arpin, who came in sixth.

He and Foust may be looking at a shuffling atop the standings, as the three drivers behind them (Speed, Sandell and Deegan) finished first, second and fourth on Saturday.

Speed’s win at GRC Washington represents the first victory by a non-Ford team at the venue. Nelson Piquet Jr. won the race in 2015, and Sandell claimed the inaugural Red Bull GRC event there in 2014.

It’s also back-to-back wins for the defending champion. Speed won the first final at Red Bull GRC MCAS New River, before the second final was waved off due to rain rendering the track unfit for racing.

Overall Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross has won five of the 2016 season’s seven races, with three victories for Foust and now two by Speed. For a team only in its third season VARX has claimed a quick and impressive dominance over the Red Bull Global Rallycross field.
