Matt Kenseth put down a scorcher of a lap on Friday afternoon, earning the pole for Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond.

Joe Gibbs Racing appears to have been in a funk to start the 2017 season. The performance by the team as a whole has not been there, accruing zero wins so far in the young Cup Series campaign. However, the team took a step forward on Friday afternoon at Richmond, as Matt Kenseth secured his first pole position of the season.

Kenseth, who finished fourth in the last race out at Bristol, will start alongside Ryan Blaney on Sunday afternoon at the action track. He edged out the young gun by just 0.041 seconds to earn the top spot. Martin Truex Jr., Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and Joey Logano rounded out the top five.

Perhaps the most interesting qualifying lap was turned in by Richard Childress Racing driver Austin Dillon, who merely coasted around the track for one lap in the opening round. He understandably did not advance out of that round, choosing to save his tires for the start of Sunday’s race rather than fight for a top qualifying position.
